Fun fact: I’ve done cake smash sessions longer than any other type of session. In fact, I found my best friend during her son’s cake smash (in the days before I was even a pro!). Over the years in doing them, I’ve learned that there’s both an art and a science to getting a variety of images during a cake smash. It’s also face-paced and easy to overlook shots! So, I’ve compiled a list of how to photograph a cake smash with 3 shots you don’t want to miss during a cake smash session!

There are three types of babies during a cake smash: the Enthusiastic One, the Apathetic One, and the Crier. No matter which type of baby you have in front of you, you’ll be crunched for time. Most of the time, there are only a few active minutes of actual cake smashing. You’ll want to make the most of these minutes, as well as the time before and after them! After all, we always want to be delivering well-rounded galleries. Bonus: these images are ones you’ll be able to get whether or not the baby is interested in the cake. So without further ado, the three shots you don’t want to overlook:

The Baby Before Cake

This may seem obvious, but you’d be surprised! I know the objective of a cake smash is, well, for the baby to smash cake. But I always try to get some classic portraits before the cake is even introduced to the baby.

The Cake on Its Own

Don’t forget to take pictures of the cake on its own… both before and after baby has had her fun!

Details

I’m a details girl. I attribute this, in part, to all of the cake smashes I’ve done- especially the ones at the beginning of my career. There are so many glorious details to be found in cake smashes! Frosting covered fingers (and toes!), cake crumbs, eyelashes looking down at cake, and more! Cake smash sessions are where I learned to find beauty in the small things, and to photograph them artfully!
